DESCRIPTION

Unknown devices may appear under the Other devices section of the Windows Device Manager after installing Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 on a ProLiant 100-Series G5 server (See Figure 1).

Figure 1: Unknown devices displayed under Other devices section of the Windows Device Manager.

This occurs because the appropriate drivers have not been installed on the ProLiant 100-Series G5 server running Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008. The Unknown devices should be labeled as "HP Null Management Controller" and "Microsoft Generic IPMI Compliant Devices."

SCOPE

Any ProLiant 100-Series G5 server running Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008.

RESOLUTION

The Unknown devices displayed in the Other devices section can be safely ignored if there is not a plan to use Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI). One of the Unknown devices should be labeled as "Microsoft Generic IPMI Compliant Device," which is used for WMI.

If WMI must be used, install the HP Null Management Controller driver and HP Null IPMI Controller driver, which will replace the Unknown device display in the Other devices section.
